To focus on our potentials instead of our limitations, and build self-confidence
To focus on our potentials, instead of our limitations, in the hope that this will build or add to self-confidence.
OVERVIEW
Most people struggle with low self-esteem and lack confidence at one time or another. Most people focus their own weaknesses and compare themselves with others. We are all imperfect; still, we all have specific gifts and talents.
Obtain index cards, pencils, and paper.
Lead some fun songs to relax the atmosphere.
Give everyone an index card. On one side, have each person list all their strengths; on the other side, they should write down their weaknesses.
Provide each participant a piece of paper. Ask them to put their names on the top. Sitting in a circle, have each person pass their paper one person to the right. Each person taking that sheet of paper writes down a sentence or a word describing what they like about the person whose name is at the top. Pass the paper around the whole circle, repeating the process until the paper returns to the owner. You may want to have the owners read aloud what others have written. Or have someone else read what was said about the person (some people may be embarrassed to read others’ comments about themselves; be sensitive).
- Was it easier to write down your strengths or your weaknesses?
- Why do you think you tend to focus on weaknesses?
- Was it easier to write things about yourself or other people?
- How did it make you feel to have people write nice things about you?
- Do you gain any sense of self-worth by helping others to feel good about themselves?
- When do you feel confident?
- We matter because we have been uniquely created.
- Each of us has special talents and gifts.
- When these are used, they bring pleasure to others and help us build our self-confidence.
- We are deeply loved.
