Deuteronomy

Atchinson, R. and Geoffrey Graham. (1998) Deuteronomy. S. Hamilton, MA: Center for Youth Studies.

III. Where They Will Be-Their Choice (Deut. 27-34).

A. Stiff warnings for disobedience.
B. Rich blessings for obedience.
C. Song, blessing, and death of Moses.

FRAMEWORK

  1. Author: Generally accepted to be Moses.
  2. Location: Transjordan (plains of Moab) and Canaan.
  3. Key people: Moses, Joshua.
  4. Historical period: At the end of the wilderness wanderings.
  5.

  1. Concepts: The name of the book means "second law." This is directed to the new generation that will be going into the promised land (the old generation died in the wilderness). Moses provides a historic account of the nation in relation to its obedience and disobedience. His presentation begs to remember the past so that it is not repeated.

YOUTH MINISTRY POSSIBILITIES

IDEAS EXAMPLES
Importance of choices. Obedience matters.
God's concern with national choices. God involved in Israel's history.
Kids need to have a history. Traditions and roots of Israel.
The choosing of a leader. Joshua's continued obedience.
The real effects of a curse. Overcome only by Jesus Christ.
Importance of journaling.* Moses writes down Israel's history.

*Note: Encourage journaling in youth ministry. Training kids how to record God's involvement in the events of their day. As a teenager grows closer to God, he or she will be able to look back through their journal and see how God really has been working. It is difficult to see His plan in short-term segments. Young people have not lived long enough to see God's major themes in their lives.
