Stigma Under the Lens - Timur, Tajikistan
http://www.christianaid.org.uk/hiv This World AIDS Day, Christian Aid and Magnum Photos present powerful stories of brave people around the world who are living with HIV under the shadow of stigma.
Timur from Tajikistan was infected with HIV while a drug user and has lost family and friends because of his status.
Millions of people in Tajikistan live in extreme poverty and high rates of intravenous drug use has led to a worrying increase in HIV cases and HIV/AIDS related deaths - HIV rates for 15 to 49-year-olds have tripled since 2001.
But now Timur is using his experience to work with Christian Aid partner SPIN Plus. SP works with intravenous drug users and people living with HIV, to run drug-use prevention and rehabilitation programmes, improve the lives of drug users living with HIV and increase access to health and social services.
