Stigma Under the Lens - Jyothi, India

Printer-friendly versionPDF version

http://www.christianaid.org.uk/hiv This World AIDS Day, Christian Aid and Magnum Photos present powerful stories of brave people around the world who are living with HIV under the shadow of stigma.

Jyothi from India turned to sex work when she was left penniless after her husband died of an HIV-related illness.

'Though I got the disease from my husband, people will say that I am HIV-positive because of my work. It is just for the sake of my children I am doing sex work.'

Jyothi has been supported by Christian Aid partner SPAD - the Society for People's Action and Development. This NGO is working to address the prevention and control of HIV and STIs in high risk and vulnerable groups.

SPAD is also part of the Milan Project - a groundbreaking partnership of four organisation providing education, treatment and support for sex workers and their clients.
