Staff Night Out

On Friday evenings we have staff night out with our summer interns. Last night we went out for delicious (and cheap) Puerto Rican food and then to check out some awesome graffiti. I have a great group of interns this summer and it was a fun evening!

Summer Interns 2009

Tonight we did our annual “Wacky Tour” where we take our summer interns around Camden and show them the neighborhoods in which we work. We finished the tour at the Art Museum in Philadelphia and then ended up playing in the fountain.

I think we have a great group of interns this year and it was a fun way to start off the summer!

Me and the teenagers

This photo was taken a year ago as we left for our StreetLeader (teenage staff members) retreat. I remember exactly what I was thinking:

“OMG. I’m on a bus full of teenagers.”

Teenagers aren’t really the group I click with the most, but a year later, I know these teens and I love them!

Teaching kids about justice.

I was doing some research this afternoon about how to teach kids about justice from a Christian perspective.

PBS Teachers has a website on justice activity ideas that I found helpful.

But, really, I can’t find many resources on the issue. If you know of any, let me know! Otherwise, maybe I should do some curriculum writing this summer!

StreetLeader Appreciation Day

Last week we had an afternoon of celebrating our teenage staff members, who we call StreetLeaders (SLs). They are high school students who work in our after school program, helping with tutoring and working with the kids. Our staff this school year was phenomenal!

The kids did a skit of impressions of the SLs, which was hilarious. Then we played a game where the SLs wore a posterboard and the kids wrote encouraging things, which also ended up being hilarious. One of the gems for a SL was, “You like to eat.” Um..Okay?!

Experiencing Christians

I was talking to my brother the other day about how some Christians we know make us NOT want to be Christians. We had such a bad experience with them that there is no way we’d want to serve or know the God they do. Thankfully, we experienced Jesus for ourselves and the hypocrites and bad examples don’t affect us as much as they could.

Many of the parents of the kids at our camp have told me how much their child loves our camp, how they talk about it all the time at home. The kids tell their parents we’re so nice and they feel loved at our camp.

Push the Rock

The Christian sports ministry called Push the Rock came to visit us this week – running field games and a basketball clinic. The coaches worked really well with the kids and everyone had a great time. Seeing the kids have to run and be athletic was really good for them. Maybe it’s not just an urban kid thing, maybe a general childhood problem these days, but our kids spend a lot of time inside playing video games or watching television. And in Camden, there aren’t a lot of safe, open fields or playground in which to play. So, I’m really glad the kids had a chance to be active!

Waterslide

Sorry for the absence of posts. This summer has been intense! I’ll be updating soon, but in the mean time….

Want to help buy an inflatable waterslide for our camp? I sort of already bought one in “faith” (hilarious, considering our camp is called Camp Faith) hoping the money would come in – the kids LOVE it.
