Description

Is your upper-middle-class-mono-culture-suburban church ready to welcome the urban street kid culture? Does the urban student have to cross a cultural boundary to come to know Jesus in your church? Is your senior pastor afraid of the students showing up at youth group? This forum may raise more questions than we have answers to but that's good! We'll discuss strategies for promoting diversity, programming for kids coming from multiple contexts and creating a safe atmosphere.

About the Speakers

Curt Gibson is the Director of Neighborhood Student Ministries for Lake Avenue Community Foundation in Pasadena, CA. He is also an experienced writer, having authored junior high curriculum for Word Action and Youth Specialties, as well as being a contributing author to the Teen Devotional Bible, and several other books on junior high ministry.

John was a junior high pastor for 12 years at Lake Avenue Church in Pasadena, and realized there was a certain demographic present in the city but missing in his youth group. Asking the question “why aren’t the urban students in my church led to a career change?” Taking his youth ministry principles into the field of community development, John is now the Executive Director of Lake Avenue Community Foundation, an organization committed to transforming Pasadena by providing programs and services for at-risk youth, low income families and homeless.

A daughter of an immigrant single mother, Myra has first-hand knowledge of the struggle of immigrant children and families. She credits the majority of her education and learning to the “School of Hard Knocks”, and is an alum of the Devos Urban Leadership Initiative. Mayra is Director of Community Educational Programs at Lake Avenue Community Foundation, where she presently serves on Leadership and oversees three after-school program sites in Pasadena. She lives in the neighborhood she serves along with her husband, Chris, and three children.
